What are the entry requirements?
An interest in the subject is the most important entry requirement. GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent) are desirable but not essential.

You will need to achieve a level 1 on an Initial Assessment. 

Is there an interview?
Yes, an interview is required and you may have to complete an initial assessment to ensure your skills are suitable for the level of the course.

What can I progress to?
The majority of students require (and achieve) a grade C in order to meet entry requirements for a variety of University courses.

What is the course about?
Students should gain an insight into:
  • What is involved in being a practitioner of biology.
  • How biologists develop scientific understanding of ourselves and the world we inhabit.
  • How these understandings can be applied to the benefit of humanity.


What are the course outcomes?
A pass in GCSE Biology and a better understanding of some current scientific issues.

Are there an additional requirements?
No.

Materials
No additional materials are required, but you are strongly recommended to buy at least one suitable GCSE Biology textbook.


How will you be assessed?
A Practical skills assessment based on activities carried out throughout the course. This makes up 10% of the overall mark.
Two written papers that can be taken up any time during the course, each making up 10% of the overall mark.
Two mulitple choice exams at the end of the course. Each contributes 10% to the final mark.
Two written papers, also at the end of the course, which are worth the remaining 50% of the overall mark.
