What a week at Stanmore College

Unique opportunity as Stanmore College hosts a Royal Institution Lecture as part of National Science and Engineering Week.

The arguably most unique and visually inspiring show of the week took place on Friday, as part of many other smaller events that had taken place during National Science and Engineering week, Dr David Porter, from the L'Oreal Young Scientist Centre at the Royal Institution kindly agreed to visit the college to present a Liquid Nitrogen show to over 250 students. The show, usually only ever presented at the Royal Institution, gave a magical insight into the wonders of science by using liquid nitrogen (which is a is colourless, odourless, non-toxic liquid at -196°C) to demonstrate how science works! Dr Porter then enlisted the help of a student Samad Dar in an experiment to shrink a helium filled balloon into a box, followed by creating an ‘exploding’ ball by pouring liquid nitrogen into a basin of washing up liquid! He finished off the wonderful display by creating ice-cream from scratch with the help of more students, which tasted as good as it looked. The students were well and truly inspired by science!

Local MP Visits Stanmore College

Local MP Tony McNulty visited the college on Thursday to see the fundraising activities taking place.  Mr McNulty, a former student at Stanmore College spoke to current students, visited the science labs where chemistry experiments were taking place for part of National Science and Engineering week, as well as popping in to see teams of fundraisers in the hall, taking part in activities which were all organized for Sport Relief.  He was even persuaded to take part in a basketball game coached by tutor Maurice and students.

Forgetful College Students raise money for a good cause!

Students at Stanmore College who have had to pay the ‘fine’ for a temporary ID badge have seen their payments put to good use in the form of a huge donation to the local mayoral charity ‘Easy Riders – Wheelchairs for Kids’. The Mayor of Harrow, Councillor Eric Silver visited the college on Tuesday to accept a cheque for £1370.67, This amount was raised simply from temporary ID card charges between September and February! The amount was raised between September 2009 and February this year. Principal Jacqui Mace said ‘Our students realise that even if they have to pay for a temporary ID in the mornings, having left their badge at home, their forgetfulness has resulted in fantastic fundraising for a worthy good cause.’
